This Day is Some Day

Greetings!

A little bit of house-keeping. I don't seem to be getting the comments that people have told me they sent. I'm experimenting with the settings, so hopefully it will get all straightened out soon. I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.

I wasn't planning on writing today, it's the weekend, and in some places the sun was shining. Today was one of those "some day" things. You know, "some day I will take that trip"; "some day I will start that hobby", "some day I will get that job done"... The list can be endless. Well, some day arrived today. Everyone needed some fresh air and sunshine, so we chased the sun. It was overcast at home so we loaded up the dog and the kids into the truck and headed into the mountains.

Abraham Lake isn't really a lake, it's a reservoir on the North Saskatchewan River. When the dam was built, the banks were flooded. For years, the slowly decomposing vegetation has been creating methane bubbles that get trapped in the ice.

I learned all this camping on the shore of the lake two summers ago. Ever since, a winter trip has been on my Adventure List.

It was worth the 2.5 hour trip There were just enough people out and about that it didn't feel creepy. The smell of the poplar buds and junipers made the air spicy and delicious. Watching Rodeo leap through the snow with that utter look of joy that only a dog on adventure can have. The kids fell asleep in the back on the drive home like they were 5 and 7 instead of 15 and 17. Nothing like fresh air and exercise!

If we had hesitated, it may have been too late for this year, the ice was already making cracking sounds and the melting snow was getting slippery to walk on. We saw mountain goats, wild horses and a flock of geese. We are in that time that hovers between seasons. We get so impatient for the green of summer that we forget the bare branches and slushy, dirty snow serve as a perfect backdrop. In the quiet air, a flock of geese honking high above us makes us stop in our tracks to scan the sky. We search the ever widening patches of flower bed soil for the first bulbs to pop through. It's like the black and white photographs, that have the tiniest hint of colour.

Not many people would describe me as impulsive. Maybe that's why I take such pleasure from these family adventures. There is a delightful freedom in the occasional impulse. The impromptu trips have few expectations, and therefore can't fall short. Just getting out to a place of beauty and allowing your senses to soak it all in is all that is required (and lots of water and snacks - adventures with hangry people are not fun!)

There is no stretching homework today, it's the weekend. Your homework is to get some fresh air and sunshine, breathe deeply, get some colour in your cheeks, find beauty in something. Appreciate something that you normally take for granted. Turn off the news and allow yourself to rest. Unplug and re-connect.

What's on your Adventure List?
