Making Your Jaw Drop!

Be Prepared Now that my truck first aid kit is complete, I'm noticing that stories of flooding from spring thaw are running rampant (pun intended!) Probably by the time the flooding reports are over, we will be into the season of forest fires, thunderstorms and tornadoes. The panic shopping done over the past few months has highlighted the need for people to be prepared. We have been told for years to have a 72 hour kit for our family. Too often we live day to day or we procrastinate. If we have learned anything this spring, it's that we never know what the future might hold. I am a champion procrastinator. In university, I sewed entire outfits, when I was supposed to be writing papers. So I speak from experience. More often than not, when I'm tired after work, I put off until "tomorrow" errands that I should run, like getting gas. More than once, I regretted it when my command start wouldn't work because the fuel gauge was too low. Depending on our location a...

Chance Favours The Prepared Mind

Image
Chance Favours the Prepared Mind - Louis Pasteur As the weather gets warmer, summer time activities are being pulled out of hibernation, and some of the activity restrictions have been lifted, people are venturing further from their houses than they have in months. Work will be picking up soon when spring break up is done. We are gardening, camping, boating, fishing, hiking, going on picnics; anything we can do to escape the four walls which have confined us. First from winter, which we are used to, then from the pandemic, which we are definitely not used to! Some things that the pandemic has brought to the forefront of our minds is the importance of being prepared and being able to be self reliant. We can’t go back to February and stock our cabinets, but we can be more thoughtful in the future and develop good habits. The panic of some created hardship for others, and none of it was necessary, if we all had some basic knowledge and routines. Many massage clients are booking appointm...

Stretching Our Boundaries and Our Bodies

Image
Broadening our Horizons I know we are not the only family to be getting around to that long to do list while we are isolating at home. In addition to tackling those "someday" projects, we have also tried a few new things and taken the opportunity to stretch the brains of our kids. Our online schooling is set up so the boys only have classes until 12:30. Which leaves them free to help with other household activities - most notably, meal preparation. Since we are not in that mad rush between getting home and getting to extra-curricular activities, I have the time (and patience - let's be honest, it's more about the patience) to let them make some of our family favorites. Hopefully, by the time they move out on their own, they will be cooking whole food from scratch, not only living on raman and KD. Today's supper is a long standing family favourite, sweet and sour meatballs. Mom Tip - Cooking is more fun if you call the big pot a cauldron. I should have known that y...

Sometimes I'm An Outside Cat

So it’s been a while since I sat at the computer, the sunshine was calling and there is yard work to do, gardens to plan, a dog to play with, a hammock to nap in. While I was away from the computer, we made homemade root beer, strawberry jam, cleaned out two closets (it's amazing what you find!) and had a family game day for Mother's Day (with my traditional take out souvlaki). It was an absolutely gorgeous May Long, which has always been gardening weekend at our house. My new garden shed was completed for Mother's Day, and it's everything that I wanted! My community garden plots are planted, the weeding is done, and the home garden is in pots waiting to be transplanted. The deck is now outdoor living space, the fire pit is set up, the gutters are cleaned out, the solar lights are hung and the rain barrel (which my day and son's made me) has a new base. I actually snuggled into my hammock with a book all of yesterday afternoon,  before the rain!  Now t...
